GILMER COUNTY DROPS SECTION TITLE TO WIRT

(03/03/2008)
Despite two starters being sick, Gilmer County kept the game close losing by a narrow margin 69-64 Friday.

The first half was an even toss up, with little indication who may wind up with the final advantage. At the break Wirt led by three, 31-27.

With less than two minutes ticking off the clock as the second half got underway, Wirt jumped to a seven point lead 36-29.

Gilmer closed the gap to four, but by midway through the third period they down by 10 points.

It wasn't until early in the fourth quarter Gilmer found their stride and closed the gap to 51-45.

Wirt held the lead the rest of the game, despite one final Gilmer challenge in the final two minutes.

Normally high scoring James Farley's game was off his normal pace as he'd been sick all day. Doug Shattuck and the rest of the team stepped up their play to make up for the deficit.

Shattuck turned in an especially strong game scoring 19. Jordan Knight had 18, Farley had nine and Zack Burkhammer netted 8.

Head coach Steve Shuff was obviously proud of the Gilmer effort, saying the "young" team had done well all season.

Shuff said they had a very solid year, ending with a 13-10 record. Gilmer is losing only two seniors: Doug Shattuck and Dylan Tomblin.

The Gilmer County varsity basketball squad lists as members: Daniel DuLude, Ryan Hough, Dylan Tomblin, Zach Burkhammer, Jordan Knight, Cody James, William Radcliff, Doug Shattuck, Cody Grogg, James Farley, Luke Montgomery and Jalil Hosey.
