Ritchie County trooper Jason Brewer made a startling discovery during a traffic stop in Ritchie County, according to WTAP-TV.
Brewer pulled a car over on US 50 on February 15th for exceeding the speed limit by 30 miles-per-hour.
Trooper Brewer found drugs on driver Mark Allen Riffle, and sensed a strong smell of marijuana from his car.
Brewer says Riffle's passenger, Michael Douglas Cox, offered a confession.
"The passenger said, 'sir, I'm going to be honest with you. I have 30 pounds of marijuana in the trunk'," Brewer said yesterday.
"At that time, I located duffel bags in the trunk. They had 26 bags of marijuana in them... a pound each."
WTAP-TV in Parkersburg said they would have been worth between $50,000-$100,000.
"I don't think, with that much marijuana on a traffic stop, that they were taking it home to use it," Brewer said. "They were going to sell it."
Riffle and Cox have been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
They're out on bond.
"Right now, we have it in evidence and we're sending it to the lab to be tested," Brewer said. "After the trial's all said and done, it will be destroyed."
