Ores Collins, 96, of Normantown, W.Va., departed this life Oct. 25, 2001, at his residence, following an unexpected illness.

Born Jan. 7, 1905, in Gilmer County, he was a son of the late William F. and Florence Minney Collins. He started driving team for the Hope Natural Gas Company at the age of 16 and went into a partnership with O. A. Collins in a general store in Lockney, W.Va., from 1921-1927. He went into business by himself in 1928, running a gas station in Lockney until 1970. Along with the retail business he raised beef cattle until 1985. He received a plaque from the Standard Oil Company for 40 years of service when he retired. He was a U.S. Government Tire Inspector during World War II. He served on the Gilmer County Board of Education from 1948-1952; served as a committee member of the ASC (Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Services) several terms as the president. The Gilmer County Farm Bureau presented him the Community Service Award in 1985 for his outstanding contribution to the community. He was a trustee of the Stumptown Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church from 1950-1985 and superintendent of the Sunday School for 15 years.

He was united in marriage to Juanita Stump Collins on June 27, 1926, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Hannah Florence and Eugene Davis of Toledo, Ohio; three grandchildren, Nancy Stevens of Evergreen, Colorado, and Jim Davis and the Rev. Mark Davis both of Toledo; and two great-grandchildren.

He was the last of his immediate family having been preceded in death by three brothers, Arnett, Hayward and Hollie Collins; and two sisters, Monnie Boggs and Jewell Kuhl.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church of Stumptown, with the Rev. Larry VanHorn, Elder Larry Fisher and the Rev. Lester Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Collins Community Cemetery of Stumptown. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. today at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc. of Glenville, and one hour prior to services Sunday at the church.
