GASSAWAY'S HISTORIC HOTEL COLLAPSES IN STREET

(02/14/2008)
The partial collapse of Gassaway's historic Lincoln Hotel has closed part of WV 4 in downtown Gassaway.

A wall of the hotel fell into the street on Feb. 5.

The 1923 hotel remained in operation until the mid-1960s.

"The hotel was famous throughout the area for its restaurant and its good old-fashioned homemade food," said Gassaway Mayor Richard Roach.

The hotel and restaurant has been vacant for the past seven years, with its roof collapsing a few years ago.

When its wall went down last week, it collapsed into the parking lot of the Gassaway Baptist Church, crushing an unoccupied car.

Mayor Roach said neither the property owner nor the city have the money needed to demolish the structure.
