MENTALLY CHALLENGED YOUTH SHOOTS 17-YEAR-old - Police say Ellen Lewis, 39, of Jenkin Jones was arrested and arraigned last Friday and charged with child neglect creating a risk for substantial injury and child neglect resulting in death.
Police say Lewis' mentally challenged son found a gun and accidentally fired it in McDowell County.
A 17-year-old was shot once in the chest and died.
Lewis is being held at the McDowell County jail on $10,000 bond.
POLICE DEAL WITH RIFLE-WIELDING MAN - Troopers and deputies arrested a man wielding a rifle in St. Albans.
Kanawha Chief Deputy Johnny Rutherford said State Police were first called to a home on West Main Street because of a report of a man threatening family members with a rifle.
When a trooper approached a room in the house, Damon Shreves, 38, pointed a rifle at the officer, according to a news release.
The sheriff's department SWAT team was called to the area.
Following a 20-minute standoff, officers talked Shreves into surrendering his weapon. No shots were fired and no one was injured.
Shreves has been charged with brandishing a firearm, obstructing an officer, assault on a police officer, and domestic assault.
