ANOTHER PEST THIS WAY COMES

(01/30/2008)
If you didn't already have enough to worry about, diseased trees, plants, beetles and bugs, here comes a newer tree killing beetle.

The state Department of Agriculture is stepping up efforts to prevent the emerald ash borer from destroying ash trees.

The bug was found on a tree in Fayette County in November.

Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglass says his agency has banned movement of any firewood from Fayette County to other counties, along with ash logs, ash timber scraps and other regulated items.

The emerald ash borer is a native of China. Since it first appeared in Michigan in 2002, the beetle has destroyed more than 20 million ash trees in the United States.
