The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources says hunters killed a record number of bears in the state last year.
The 1,807 bruins killed broke a record set in 2003, when 1,730 bears were killed during gun and archery seasons.
DNR Director Frank Jezioro says contributing factors included poor food conditions, good weather in December and a sizable bear population that allowed hunters to kill the animals in counties not normally known for bear hunting.
Gun hunters killed 1,071 bears, followed by archery hunters who bagged 736 bears. |
