Twelve members have launched the Little Kanawha Longbeards Chapter of the
National Wild Turkey Federation, according to President Brad Lay. Lay says the group
is looking for additional members from the local area. Dan Chapman and Bruce
Fitzwater are currently serving as officers.
The national group, which was organized in 1973, has 390,000 members and is
dedicated to the conservation of wild turkey and the preservation of the traditional
hunting of the bird.
The population of wild turkey in North America has increased from 1.3 million to 5.6
million, according to Federation numbers.
