With fewer resources and fewer volunteers, Calhoun's three volunteer fire departments managed to meet the challenge of one of the worst, if not the worst, years of destruction by fire.
While services have continued to diminish in rural areas, citizens are relying on volunteer firemen and EMS personnel to fill lots of gaps, many beyond their basic responsibilities.
From ice storms to floods, car accidents, downed electric lines, to trees in the road, rescues, and dozens of other situations, the first line of help is our local fire departments, who work closely with Calhoun EMS to show up at time of need.
We honor the Grantsville, Arnoldsburg and Upper West Fork Volunteer Fire Departments today with a Shining Star.
** Many people in Calhoun County and the area are community minded, generous and dedicated. The Hur Herald staff would like to recognize those individuals and groups for all they do.
We ask our readers to submit names of individuals or groups, along with a brief description of why they are Shining Stars.
