Cawthon's short-changed Gilmer outhouse
could be biggest, but not most famous
By Bob Weaver 2007
Writer and Hur Herald columnist Jack Cawthon has tried to one-up the Hur Herald's outhouse, by claiming his is the largest outhouse in America.
Cawthon's Gilmer County privy is inside a barn, and it may be the largest, but the Herald's outhouse is more famous.
It has been discussed on National Public Radio, been written about many times over the years in newspapers and has been given the highest honor any outhouse can receive, placed in Don Ponder's Hall of Outhouse Fame.
More recently, the outhouse hit the front page of the Charleston Daily Mail with lots of photos.
That story has been republished in dozens of West Virginia newspapers, and journals from England to Japan.
While we would not diminish Cawthon's efforts to get attention for his privy, he will have to work much harder.
