HUNTERS FLOCKING TO CALHOUN WOODS

(11/19/2007)
The observation of the heavy traffic into Calhoun since Friday could mean a record number of hunters hitting the woods at dawns early light today for the opening of deer season.

The county's only supermarket has been crowded with camo dressed men and boys over the weekend stocking up for deer camp.

This year we have yet to spot the high-priced Dodge truck with gun racks and storage bins, pulling a trailer with six four-wheelers.

The Division of Natural Resources estimates that between tomorrow and December 1st, about 320,000 hunters will try their luck at bagging a buck.

Last year, hunters killed nearly 66,000 bucks.

Gun season for bucks is open in 51 of the state's 55 counties.

Hunters will have to head into the woods in northern counties because abundant acorn crops will keep deer out of fields.

An acorn shortage in the south means more bucks will be killed in the fields.
