Deer hunters will be on the alert for a virus called EHD or epizootic hemorrhagic disease.
The disease has been detected in deer from more than 20 counties, including Calhoun and most regional counties.
Officials are saying the disease is more widespread than it has been in years past.
While it doesn't pose any danger to humans, it does kill deer.
Biologists will be going to the various check-in stations around the state during the first few days of buck season to take samples of tissue for testing.
They add that hunters should avoid cutting through bone or the parts of the deer that include the nervous system.
