Fred W. Smith, 84, of Spencer, W.Va., died Sept. 28, 2001, at the
Roane General Hospital in Spencer.
He was born April 29, 1913, in Kincheloe, W.Va., a son of the late W.T. and
Florence Curry Smith. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1932, formerly
worked for United Fuel Gas Company, co-owned Spencer Taxi, and was owner of
Smith's Esso. He was a former mayor of Spencer, and was one of the first
magistrates in Roane County, having retired in 1984. He was an active member of
the Spencer Lion's Club, and was former chairman of the board for the Roane
County Committee on Agin. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of
Spencer.
He is survived by his two daughters, Jane Secrist of Jackpot, Nev., and Mary
Holbert of Birmingham, Ala.; one son, Fred Smith of Baltimore, Md.; one sister,
Freda Roberts of Morenci, Mich.; two brothers, Wayne of Littleton, Colo., and O.
Eugene of Kent, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Clare Morford Smith in 1987; one
daughter, Peggy Sinnett in 1996; two sisters, Mildred Hoff and Minnie Wilson; and
four brothers, Lee, Roy, Don and Doyle Smith.
Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the First Baptist Church of
Spencer, with the Rev. Victor Hayes and the Rev. Lester Walker officiating. Burial
will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral
Home, Spencer, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
