LOST CREEK - Jeff Goodrich had a career day and Calhoun County
overcame a frustrating first quarter to hammer South Harrison 42-7
Friday night.
The Red Devils, rebounding nicely from their only loss of the season, rode the running of Goodrich all night long. Overall the senior tailback rushed for 273 yards on 20 carries while scoring twice from 21 and nine yards in the rout.
Caleb Hart, who returned to action following an injury, backed
Goodrich in the scoring column. Hart had two touchdowns.
Matt Houchin added a score, as did Jeremy Conley as the Red Devils
went to 5-1 on the season.
Despite the lopsided score it could have been worse had the Red Devils had any luck in the first quarter as penalties eliminated two touchdowns. Overall Calhoun was flagged six times for 65 yards in the period.
The officials also reversed a decision following a Calhoun fumble
recovery giving the ball back to South Harrison.
Calhoun drove deep into South Harrison territory thanks to a 57-yard scamper by Houchin. The Red Devils appeared to score on a run by Goodrich but the touchdown was nullified by a penalty. The Red Devils appeared to have scored again when Houchin hit Josh DeWeese in the end zone. But again a penalty took away the score.
The Red Devils were not able to score on the drive.

South Harrison did little and appeared to have fumbled the ball away near midfield. However, after conferring and with the Red Devils offense ready to play, the officials changed directions giving the ball back to the Hawks.
The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie although the Red Devils had outgained the Hawks 151-3 in total yardage.
That all changed in the second quarter as the Red Devils began to
break the game wide open.
First Goodrich scored from 21 yards out and Nick Whytsell added the
first of six extra point attempts he was to make.
Then it was Conley's turn and the junior fullback bulled into the end zone from two yards out to cap a long drive that started at the Calhoun two.
Calhoun scored again with time running out in the first half when
Houchin took it in from 20 yards out putting a damper on the
homecoming festivities South Harrison was planning at intermission.
South Harrison attempted an onside kick to start the second half and that ploy backfired as the ball rolled out of bounds near midfield.
Calhoun made the Hawks pay dearly for their miscue as Goodrich scored his second touchdown of the night, this one from nine yards away.
South Harrison then mustered its only offensive life of the night as fullback Thomas Wallace scored on a 34-yard run. That made the score 28-7 and it was the high point of the evening for the Hawks as Calhoun answered quickly as Hart scored the first of his two touchdowns from a yard out.
Hart's 12-yard run in the fourth quarter set the final 42-7 score as Calhoun coach Bryan Sterns turned things over to the second unit the rest of the way.
Calhoun, which should move back into the top 10 in the WVSSAC rankings this week, is idle until Oct. 11 when it travels to Roane County.
