WV HAS LOWEST NUMBER OF COLLEGE GRADS IN USA

(09/13/2007)
Despite years of efforts to increase college enrollment, West Virginia is at the bottom in the percent of residents who hold degrees.

US Census data released yesterday show only 16.5 percent of West Virginia adults 25 and older held at least a bachelor's degree in 2006.

That's the lowest rate in the nation.

Massachusetts led all states in college graduates, with 37 percent.

The data come from the American Community Survey. The annual survey of 3 million households has replaced the Census Bureau's long-form questionnaire from the once-a-decade census.
