Sidney Boggs, 59, of Spencer passed away Friday, September 7, 2007, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.
Sidney was born July 30, 1948, in DePue Hospital in Spencer, a son of the late Hoyt and Clara Brown Boggs. He was a 1966 graduate of Spencer High School and attended Glenville State College.
He worked briefly for the United States Postal Service and entered into the business of a freelance photographer about 1970. He also began taking award-winning photos for Spencer Newspapers about 1972 and continued until his illness.
He was elected to the Spencer City Council in 2005 and currently served in that position. He was a member of the Roane County Chamber of Commerce, the Spencer Development Authority, the Spencer-Roane Volunteer Fire Department, and was a former member of the DeMolay.
Sidney's greatest love in life was attending sports and school events, working closely with coaches for over 35 years at Spencer High and Roane County Schools, where he took thousands of photos. He never really sold many pictures but he loved giving a photo to hundreds and even thousands of school children who may have never had the opportunity to have a picture of themselves, whether it be a sporting or any school event.
Sidney loved his community and the people who lived there. He will be greatly missed.
Sidney is survived by the thousands of people whom he touched and who loved him.
Funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry "Butch" Greathouse and Bill Walton officiating. Spencer Mayor Terry A. Williams will give a eulogy. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Spencer-Roane Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 673, Spencer, WV 25276.
A dinner in Sidney's honor will be given following the graveside service at the Mount Olive Cemetery at 5:30 p.m. at the Spencer Heritage Park Community Building.
