The community came to say goodbye to members of the National Guard in Spencer this weekend, a few days before the first phase of their deployment to Iraq.

At least twelve soldiers from Calhoun belong to the Spencer unit.

The call-up includes Gregory Lee, Sam Lynch, Matt Taylor, Robby Parsons, Charles O'Neal, Bryan Norman, Andy Morrison, Roy Williams, Bryan Gungle, Richard Goff, William Boone and Espe Clothier.

Members of the WV Army National Guard 821st Engineering Co., with approximately 116 members in Summersville and another 55 at the Spencer detachment, are scheduled to leave for Fort McCoy, Wisconsin next Saturday.

After special training, they are expected to leave for Iraq in 30 to 90 days.

Staff Sgt. Carla Sloter said most of the members of the local detachment are from Roane, Calhoun and Jackson counties.

"The majority of them have been here for a while," she said. "This will be their second deployment."

The Spencer Detachment was called-up in 2003.

The former 1092nd Engineers spent two months at Fort Bragg, N.C., and then went to Iraq where they spent about a year, for a total deployment of approximately 14 months.

The unit's members are returning to the armory for three days this week for "out processing" before the actual deployment from the community this Saturday.

A parade is planned for Saturday.

The 821st will be working on road building, repair and pushing dirt.
