Every little community in Sunny Cal once had a country store, within horse riding or walking distance.
In terms of the economy, its been a long way to Walmart.
The greater Cremo area near the mouth of Rowels Run had the Poling Store, operated by Willard and Elva Poling for 25 years, from 1932 to 1957.
Their son, Duane Poling of Grantsville, says the store had an elaborate home delivery operation that extended from near Creston to the Mouth of Triplett along the West Fork of the Little Kanawha.
"Of course we went up and down Rowel's Run with a wagon and horse and later a truck," Poling said.
The store was a destination for many families who came for the grist mill.
"Every Friday we went to Spencer to get supplies, dropping off groceries and merchandise along the way. We sold fresh Sunbeam bread to houses on the way back."
