WV RANKS ON BOTTOM WITH RURAL PAVING - Calhoun Projects Announced

(06/29/2007)
A national study says road conditions have improved in the US over the past two decades.

The study ranks West Virginia number 50 at the bottom in rural paving, but over-all the state's highways are ranked at 26.

The University of North Carolina-Charlotte has released the state-by-state breakdown on data from 1984 through 2005.

The study ranked highway systems according to cost-effectiveness, which was determined by factors such as traffic fatalities, congestion and highway maintenance.

West Virginia has the nation's sixth-largest network of state-maintained roads, ranked in the top five in several categories dealing with the money spent per mile of roadway.

The biggest nationwide highway problem is congestion, with the number of highway deaths up slightly.

CALHOUN ROAD PAVING

District administrator Clyde Miles said "According to our Assistant Highway Administrator in Calhoun County, the only asphalt being laid at this time by county forces is by grader/skip patching on WV 16 and US 33."

"Two other contract paving projects, Left Fork of Daniels Run and the Right Fork of Daniels Run have been completed," a short distance on each.

"One additional paving project on Pine Run is being considered if year-end funding balances allow," Miles said.

A paving project was on the annual list for US 33 in the Sand Ridge area.
