Last week was pretty hectic for Gilmer County High School's Tim White.

One his long-time dreams were realized - signing to play for the Glenville State College Pioneers. Like Whitney Minigh, who will be a Lady Pioneer this season, White turned down offers from other schools.

White said he's wanted to be a Pioneer since age four.

Pioneer Head Coach Dwaine Osborne's been keeping an eye on White's development as a player for several years.

Osborne remembers White attended a Glenville State College basketball camp three or four years ago. "I recognized then he had the potential to be a pretty good player."

As it turned out, White had a stellar high school career, as is thought to be the best men's player to come out of Gilmer County in a number of years.

In his sophomore year White was named to the Second Team All-LKC, as well as Special Honorable Mention All-State.

Last year (2006), as a junior, he made First Team All LKC, Second Team All-State and First Team Mid-Ohio Valley.

This year he earned top awards, named to the First Team All-LKC, First Team All-State and First Team Mid-Ohio Valley.

Standing at 6'-6" tall, 195 pounds, White dominated the court, and was Gilmer's leading scorer and rebounder. This year he averaged 19.5 points per game, 12.1 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists. His career point average is 18.1. During his four years at Gilmer County he scored 1,196 points.

White was leading scorer and captain each year he played at Gilmer County.

"He was our leader from the day he walked in the gym until the day he walked out," Gilmer head basketball Coach Steve Shuff said. Despite White's impressive statistics, Shuff said the young player's biggest attribute are leadership qualities.

"He was a true leader and a good representative of our program off the court," Shuff added.

In addition to his prowess on the basketball court, he was a National Honor Society member for four years, was named a LKC Scholar Athlete, and lettered in baseball for four years.

White will graduate third in his class of 93.

This Spring, White decided to go out for track and burned up the competition locally. As of last week, he'd turned in the fastest meet time in the 100-meter at 11.1 seconds. He also ran the 200, 400 and 400X1 relay.

Until the West Virginia State Track Meet Saturday in Charleston he was unbeaten in the 200 meter run. He netted third place in the 400, at 51.98; second place in the 100 meter, at 11.57 and second in the 200 meter with a time of 22.6. All-in-all, not too shabby for someone who never ran track before.

White has been invited to play in the North-South All Star Basketball Classic, June 22, at the South Charleston Community Center.

"I'm excited to get him," Pioneer head coach Dwaine Osborne added. "He does well in the classroom and he's come up here to play for the right reasons."

Osborne's in his third year as head coach. During the previous season the team was comprised of nine freshman and no seniors. It was a rebuilding year.

This year, with the addition of several players, and building on the successes of players Chase Groves and Marcus Catney, Osborne believes if things "mesh together" the season looks promising.

White is the son of Tim and Pam White of Sand Fork. White has one sister, Marianna, who attends Gilmer County High School and is in the seventh grade.
