Gov. Bob Wise spoke yesterday about economic development at a state-wide economic summit in Flatwoods. Wise gave his view of initiatives that would help move the economy forward. About ten other speakers shared their visions with 150 county and educational officials.

Four Calhoun officials attended the West Virginia Economic Summit, including members of the Calhoun Board of Education, Carlene Frederick, Juanita Berdine and Burl Simers, along with County Commission President Bob Weaver.

While the roundtable discussions were limited, information was shared with other officials regarding the impact of deep well drilling. Mac Holladay, CEO of Market Street Services presented "How Local Government Can Determine Their Economic Destinies."

Professor Robert Bastress, WVU Law School, presented perspectives on regionalization of counties and services, and the constitutional rights of counties.

The event was sponsored by the West Virginia School Board Association, the West Virginia Association of Counties, the West Virginia Municipal League and the County Commissioners' Association of West Virginia.
