A Friday night concert, an annual Spring event for the Concert Band, culminated in an unusual and energetic rendition of 'Godzilla Eats Las Vegas' at the Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

Costumes and props added to the suspense as some percussion members donned what looked to be "Men in Black" shades, the keyboard player wore a gold cape, and Godzilla even made an appearance throwing music around lumbering across the stage.

"Men in Black" percussion

The piece sounded like a difficult arrangement, with many 'time' and style changes.

The band, under the direction of Lloyd E. Bone Jr., gave a professional-level performance.

Bone also proved to be an able announcer and his quick wit won over the audience.

It is also my first experience witnessing a band director smile at band members while conducting.

Dr. Donna Maher

Dr. Donna Maher, of Glenville State College's music department, was featured on another piece, "Concertino," performing a long and intricate flute solo raising the 'performance bar' considerably for any flute player. She also recently performed as a member in Clarksburg Orchestra at Robert C. Byrd High School in Clarksburg.

Other numbers included: Lincolnshire Posey, Abram's Pursuit and Folk Song Suite.

The Glenville State College Jazz band is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m., May 4. The public is invited.
