(04/28/2007)
A Newton, Roane County man who tried to squeeze his car through the West Virginia Veterans Memorial, has a "medical condition," according to his attorney Benjamin Bryant. "He has no ax to grind with the military," he said.

Howard Roland Gentry, 59, served six years in the U.S. Air Force, including a tour in Southeast Asia. His father was a World War II veteran. "He has nothing against veterans, or state government, or culture," Bryant said.

Video cameras caught Gentry in March driving his his two-door sports coupe around the state Capitol Complex, causing $200,00 damages, including damage to the $2.7 million vets memorial.

He has been charged with a felony for destruction of property.

He remains free on bond.
