CALHOUN ROCKS - A Natural Cathedral

(09/19/2024)

These rocks rest above the West Fork of the Little
Kanawha River near Altizer, in a narrow hollow, over
which a tiny stream has eroded a hole for the water to flow

By Bob Weaver

The Calhoun landscape is covered with rock formations, large and small. In some areas the rocks extend for miles across ridge tops, while in narrow hollers the rocks create huge overhangs.

Nearly every child born here has a connection to their favorite climbing or hiding rocks, or rock caves into which they crawled for adventure or solitude.

"Geologists have a saying - rocks remember." - Neil Armstrong

"A pile of rocks ceases to be a rock when somebody contemplates
it with the idea of a cathedral in mind." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
