Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulators say they have found almost 90 more safety violations at Massey Energy's Alma Number One coal mine beyond those that contributed to a fatal fire that killed two miners.
Thursday, MSHA levied a $1.5 million fine against Massey Coal, the largest fine ever issued, linked to 25 safety violations that lead to the death of the two miners.
MSHA hasn't assessed penalties for the additional fines.
The latest violations follow more than 500 issued since the fire.
While MSHA declined to characterize that figure, its records suggest during the same period, MSHA issued 379 violations to another Massey longwall mine in Boone County.
Massey has 30 days to pay up or contest the fine.
Historically, federal fines have been drastically cut to a small percentage of the original amount.
