The Kanawha County Commission president is threatening to sue Internet telephone provider Vonage over its failure to pay 911 fees.
Commissioner Kent Carper says under state law, all telephone service providers are required to pay a 911 service fee of $2 per household customer to the local 911 provider.
Though Vonage offers phone service via the Internet, "they're providing telephone service," said Carper, and should therefore be paying 911 service fees.
The complaint asks for service fees beginning July 1, 2006.
Carper couldn't say how much money Vonage might owe the county, because he doesn't know how many customers the company has, but he said he would go to court if officials for Vonage don't pay up.
