Changing block scheduling back to a seven-period schedule is being discussed by the Calhoun Board of Education, the board opted not to vote on the issue at their last meeting.

The board is inviting parents and teachers to a special meeting March 5th to discuss the issue at Calhoun Middle-High School.

Generally, most teachers favor block scheduling.

Board president Lee Evans is supporting the change, among other board members. Evans said "Many parents do not prefer block scheduling."

Board member Steve Whited said he was concerned that block scheduling was not meeting the needs of the latest requirements from the state.

Currently, Calhoun Middle-High School has modified block scheduling, three blocks having 90-minute time frames, and one block having a 50-minute time frame.

Teacher Tammy Yoak said changing to a seven-period schedule would hurt lower level students, saying "The drop-out rate will soar."

"A big issue, as time has gone by, we have fewer teachers to teach more things," said teacher Maggie Bennett.

Board member Mike Wilson said "I'm concerned we can't fit all the electives into the schedule," referring to new standards which go in effect in 2008-09. Those standards are related to graduation.

Calhoun Middle-High School principal Karen Kirby said most teachers have mixed feelings about the issue, saying "It needs to be studied in depth," before making a change.

Kirby said a change could create a scheduling problem with Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center.

Board member Cynthia Dale said she would like to hear more from teachers regarding the issue. "We need feedback," she said. Dale said the board is "under pressure" to change block scheduling.
