VERIZON FREEZES LONG DISTANCE RATES - Other Long Distance Rates Cut

(08/24/2001)
Verizon, the original Bell Atlantic company, has agreed to freeze their long distance rates through 2005. The agreement was hatched with the Public Service Commission. They have also agreed to cut access fees charged independent companies by three or four cents a call. Verizon has among the highest in-state charges in America for long distance calling.

Billy Jack Gregg says the savings to West Virginians will be about $20 million.

The agreement also puts a ceiling on what the company can charge customers for basic long distance service, which some reports say is among the highest charges in the country. They are free to charge whatever for additional add-on services.
