ELIZABETH SURVIVING ON BOTTLED WATER

(02/01/2007)
A water leak in Wirt County has been repaired, but hundreds of area residents remain under a boil water advisory.

Water main breaks shut off water to Elizabeth customers and forced local schools to shut down.

Three water breaks along Route 14 in Elizabeth started the problems, leaving the area with no water.

Elizabeth has been surviving on bottled water.

"It happens usually when there's a bad freeze like this. The ground heaves and has a tendency to work on the pipes," said a local worker.

Some of the town's pipes have been in the ground since the 1930s.

Water has been restored, but a boil advisory remains in effect for at least the next 48 hours.
