RETIRED WVDOH WORKERS ASKED TO PLOW SNOW

(01/18/2007)
The West Virginia Department of Highways is asking recent retirees to fill in for snow plowing and salt spreading.

WVDOH has 631 job vacancies, mostly truck-driving positions.

This winter has been mild, but the agency has concerns about manpower.

In Preston and Monongalia counties alone, there are a total of 28 vacant positions. There are 55 in the district that serves Kanawha, Putnam, Boone, Clay and Mason counties.

Jeff Black, Director of Human Resources for the Department of Transportation says the highways division has sent letters to at least 100 recent retirees asking if they'll help out this winter.

Black says several have agreed to come back to work temporarily or be on call in the event of bad weather.

Black says the number of vacancies is the most the agency has ever had at one time.

A large number of the department's workforce is set for retirement.

In addition to retirements, officials attribute the shortage to workers leaving for higher-paying private sector jobs.
