Calhoun finally had a home game but still is in search of its first win.
The Red Devils entertained Wirt County and dropped a 66-42 win to the
Tigers.
Calhoun kept the game close most of the way but a bunch of third quarter
fouls allowed the Tigers to sneak away and set up a deluge of fourth quarter
free throws.
In the fourth quarter the Tigers shot 18 times at the foul line to Calhoun's
four. Overall Wirt was 16 of 31 free throws while the Red Devils managed 12
of 16.
The Red Devils were led by junior Andrew Norman, who hit nine of 12 free
throws, en route to a team high 14 points. Zach Moore backed him with 13
points and 11 rebounds. Josh DeWeese added eight points and 10 rebounds
while Lucas Morford added six. Jacob Dodd and Justin Gerwig added five
points apiece.
Chase Mills and Alex Wilson led Wirt with 19 apiece.
The game started slowly as Wirt took a 9-7 lead at the end of the first
quarter.
Calhoun fought back in the second quarter outscoring the Tigers 18-17 for a
one-point halftime deficit, 26-25.
The third quarter proved to be the Red Devils' Achilles Heel as Wirt enjoyed
a five-point advantage (18-13) but managed to get the Red Devils in foul
trouble setting up the Tigers in the bonus situation early. They used the
free throw advantage to pull away in the fourth quarter.
With the loss Calhoun drops to 0-8. The Red Devils will attempt to get off
the Schneider tonight with a home game against Roane County.
Wirt won the junior varsity game 50-27.
Greg Myers led the Red Devils with nine while Chuck Kendall added seven,
Kyle Keesler five, Harold McCumbers four and Justin Gerwig two. Cai
Clothier, Anthony Richards and Noah Sweeney all played but did not score.
