Calhoun County played two good games over the weekend but still came away
with two losses pushing its winless streak to seven games.
The Red Devils played host Clarksburg Notre Dame in the opening game Friday
and came away with a 60-53 loss.
On Saturday the Red Devils dropped a 61-51
decision to Webster County in the consolation game. Williamstown won the
championship with a one-point 52-51 win over Notre Dame.
In the Friday night game Calhoun trailed all along but kept things close
until Notre Dame grabbed a 17-point lead (46-29) in the fourth quarter.
That
's when the Red Devils began a furious comeback that saw them slice the lead
to seven before the game ended.
One thing that helped the Fighting Irish stave off the Red Devils' rally was
a 38-19 advantage at the free throw line.
Josh DeWeese led Calhoun with 23 points and 24 rebounds while Zach Moore
added 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Jacob Dodd added four points and six rebounds while Lucas Morford chipped in
with three.
Justin Gerwig and Andrew Norman had one point each wile Kyle
Keesler played but did not score.
In the consolation game Saturday Calhoun led on numerous occasions before
falling to a free throw barrage by the Highlanders in the fourth quarter.
Webster shot 22 free throws in the fourth - 29 overall - while Calhoun shot
10 for the game.
Moore led the Red Devils with 17 points, while adding 13 rebounds, four
assists and three steals. DeWeese backed him with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
DeWeese also had three steals and three assists.
Dodd had 10 points and five rebounds while Norman added five and Keesler and
Gerwig two each. Norman also had four assists.
Calhoun is idle until Jan. 4, 2007, when it entertains Wirt County. It will
be the Red Devils' first home game of the season.
