Doddridge unleashed a torrent of three-point goals and went on to post a
68-49 victory of the season over Calhoun Tuesday night at West Union.
The Red Devils played their best game of the season but Doddridge was able
to offset that with some tremendous shooting from the outside in the first
quarter, setting the tone for the game.
The Bulldogs hit six three-point goals in the first period to more than
offset the seven-point effort of Calhoun freshman Zach Moore as Doddridge
went on top 20-14.
The second quarter proved to be decisive for the Bulldogs as they enjoyed a
19-10 advantage for a 39-24 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs continued their blitz in the third quarter before the Red
Devils switched to a man-to-man defense to rein in Doddridge's big gunners.
Especially impressive down the stretch defensively was freshman Justin
Gerwig who was assigned to cover Matt Dotson. Gerwig held Dotson to five
points after he had torched the Red Devils for 17 of his game high 22
points.
The Red Devils also did a good job on the Bulldogs' high-scoring Dan Hill.
Hill, who had been scoring more than 20 points a game, had five.
Josh DeWeese led the Red Devils with 15. Moore backed him with 14. Andrew
Norman and Lucas Morford had six each while Jacob Dodd had five and Justin
Gerwig two.
Moore and DeWeese had 11 rebounds apiece as the Red Devils out rebounded the
Bulldogs 31-25.
Moore and Norman had four assists each while Dodd had three. DeWeese also
had three blocked shots.
Doddridge won the reserve game 72-17.
The Red Devils player short-handed because of illness and injuries and
finished the game with only four players on the court after Harold McCumbers
fouled out.
Doddridge stomped on the Red Devils and rolled to a 49-0 lead in the third
quarter before McCumbers hit a three-point shot.
The Bulldogs had a 45-0 lead at the half.
In the second half Calhoun held its own with the Bulldogs and were only
outscored 27-17.
Chuck Kendall led Calhoun with six points. McCumbers added five, Greg Myers
three, Anthony Richards two and Gerwig one.
Calhoun returns to action Thursday night at third-ranked Class A Parkersburg
Catholic.
