CANVASS COUNTS 1,723 CALHOUN VOTERS - Disney Characters Get Usual Write-ins

Calhoun voters cast 1,723 ballots during last weeks General Election, according to a canvass conduced yesterday by the Calhoun Commission.

Calhoun Clerk Richard Kirby said there were few problems with the election, the electronic voting machines functioned well.

186 Republicans cast straight party tickets (27.31%) and 485 Democrats cast straight tickets (71.22%). Ten members of the Mountain Party cast straight tickets.

Voters cast 991 votes for Robert Byrd-D (59.48%) and 612 for John Raese-R (36.73%) for US Senate, with Jesse Johnson receiving 63 votes.

Shelly Moore Capito-R received 875 votes (52.68%) and Mike Callaghan-D received 785 votes (47.26%) for Congress.

Larry Edgell-D received 1,019 votes (66.13%) and Wayne Weber-R received 522 votes (33.87%) for State Senate.

William Stemple-D, unopposed, received 1,331 votes (98.67%) for House of Delegates.

Kevin Helmick-D received 1,323 votes (99.18%) for County Commissioner.

The Library Levy received 1,026 votes for (65.35%) and 544 against (34.65%)

The canvass showed 20 provisional ballots (challenged), 15 of which were counted.

Several names sprung up as write-ins during yesterday's canvass by the commission.

The canvass was being conducted for last Tuesday's General Election.

Frequent write-in names showed up for the House of Delegates race, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck got one vote each, but Goofy was more popular with two votes.

There was considerable write-in interest for the House of Delegates, with Robert Law, one; Steve Poling, one; Tony Morgan, two; Jason Nettles, two, Larry Cottrell, two; Bob Groves, one; Charlie McKown, one.

Larry McCallister received seven write-ins for County Commissioner and former candidate Perry Jenkins received one.

One write-in each Jay Smerek, Jr.-I for US House; Teresa Nary, Calhoun Commission; Daniel Nary, House of Delegates; Ralph Carpenter-I, House of Delegates.

The commission will officially certify the election Wednesday afternoon.
