Spencer's tattoo artist Rodney Harper said he always wanted to make a horror movie.
With the help of the computer wizardry, cinematographer and creative madness of Tim Davis (and lots of other folks), crazy Mongo comes to life in a 45-minute feature that will premiere Halloween night at the historic Robey Theater.
It's "Pretty Girls Make Graves," produced by an eclectic group of performers, musicians and technicians.
"It's a bloody murder story," said Harper, whose interest peaked in horror flicks while working ten years at the video store Backstage at the Robey.
The storyline is about eccentric and wealthy businessman Mike Titus, who lives completely alone in his fortune until he meets the love of his life Rebecca.
She is new in town and looking for some companionship.
As fate would have it, this friendship blossoms into marriage.
Mike's life seems perfect until one evening he decides to symbolize his undying love for Rebecca with matching tattoos.
The seemingly jestful tattoo artist Dr. Jeb suggests an ancient symbol that would bond the couple together for life. They
both receive "the mark" and set themselves on a path that leads to greed, deceit and murder.
The cast includes local actors and musicians, with scenes filmed in the Spencer area, Spencer Cemetery, McIntosh Mansion, Serenity Cup Café, the tattoo shop and a scene deep in the woods near Boggs Fork.
"We've had a four-month blast making it. We've really had fun," said
Harper, hopeful that area folks will come out for the premiere October 31 at 9:30 p.m. There will also be live music by Criminal Supply Company and a magic show. Admission is $5.
"It'll be a hoot," he said.
