Anna Sampson, running one of her best races of the year, roared to nearly a two-minute victory over her nearest competition Tuesday in winning the individual title and leading the Red Devils to the team title in the Calhoun Invitational at County Park.
On the boys side Gilmer County beat Roane despite the individual brilliance of Randy Price of Roane.
In the middle school race Steven Keaffaber was first and Luke Moore second for the Red Devils.
Sampson, a sophomore, had a time of 24:31.61 for the 3.2-mile course to beat runner-up Beth Ann Moyers of Gilmer, who came in with a time of 26:15.88. Shae Gainer of Gilmer took third followed by Maggie Cavender of Roane and Rachel Ramezan of Gilmer.
Calhoun's second runner was senior Grace Keaffaber, competing in her first race of the season, who had a time of 31:50.06. She was followed by Maria Kisner (33:28.16), Emily Brady (35:30.91) and Carrie Graffius (35:58.20).
On the boys side Josh Parsons led Calhoun with a time of 22:13.95. It was Parsons' second cross country race of the season.
David Lee was next for the Red Devils with a time of 24:27.57. Zach Stump (44:14.01) rounded out the scoring for the Red Devils, who did not have a full team.
Gilmer County, which was led by Dylan Tomblin, beat Roane for the team title, 24-38.
Other runners for Gilmer County were Lee Papouschek (third), Noah Kinder (fifth), Eddie Hartman (sixth), Doug Shattuck (eighth), Pat Cundiff (ninth), James Farley (10th), Gabe Aviles and Will Radcliff.
Following Price, who won with a time of 20:15.33, were Justin Fisher (fourth), Jeremiah Coon (seventh), Jeremy Hall (12th) and Sky Parrish (14th).
Calhoun returns to action Oct. 11 with the LKC meet at Mineral Wells.
