Calhoun survived a case of the "Homecoming Blues" to post an 8-6 victory over South Harrison in a key LKC match up Friday night.

The Red Devils were able to down the pesky Hawks when Chance Hardway and Matt Houchin combined for a pass-catch touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Even at that it took a game-saving tackle by Caleb Ball late in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

Despite being virtually punch less in the first half the Red Devils trailed only 6-0 at intermission.

But after Queen Dani Church and her court were introduced at halftime the Red Devils shook off their case of the "Homecoming Blues" and took over in the second half to gain the victory.

During the game the Red Devils had several flashes of brilliance, including:

-The running of Eddie Burrows who gained 43 yards after Caleb Hart suffered another leg injury in the third quarter.

-The running and punting of Jeff Goodrich. Goodrich had 77 yards rushing with 73 of them coming after intermission. He also averaged 37 yards on six punts.

-The cool hand of Houchin who grabbed a bad snap on the extra point attempt (Nick Whytsell was lined up to kick) and hitting Hardway in the end zone for the two-point conversion. He had hit Hardway with an eight-yard scoring pass that tied the game setting up the extra point attempt.

-Hardway's sure hands on both the touchdown and the conversion along with his block of a South Harrison punt.

-Zach Moore's three receptions for 71 yards, including a 54-yard run and catch on a third down play. Moore, a freshman, did all that despite being hampered by a strong South Harrison defense and a slick field.

-Roman Rader's interception in the fourth quarter, which killed a South Harrison drive. He made the interception on the next play following a muffed interception.

-Ball running down South Harrison fullback Scott Brosius after he took a screen pass and raced 45 yards down the sideline. Ball was the last man with a chance to catch Brosius as time was running down and Calhoun was clinging to an 8-6 lead.

-The defensive efforts of several key players including Zac Yeager, Jake Wagoner, Steven Wagoner, Cody Cottrell and Hart in stopping the South Harrison offense in the second half.

South Harrison took a 6-0 lead on a nine-yard run by Brosius in the first quarter and it look like it might stand up since Calhoun did not have an offense in the first half as 18 yards total offense and two first downs would attest.

But after intermission the Red Devils were as dominant as the Hawks had been before intermission, moving the ball at will but failing to come up with more than one touchdown.

But that one touchdown was enough as the Red Devils moved to 5-1 on the season.

The Red Devils should move up in the ratings. Pending the outcome of the PCHS-Hancock, Md., game the Red Devils will have either a rating of either 6.83 or 7.0.

Calhoun is off next week before playing host to Roane County, a 22-8 victor over Class AA top-ranked Sissonville Friday night.
