KEENEY GUILTY OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER IN ROANE DRUG DEATH

(09/15/2006)
Twenty-five-year-old Tiffany Dawn Keeney, of Spencer was found guilty of first degree murder this week in Roane County Circuit Court, related to the death of her boyfriend in March 2004.

Keeney had been indicted on charges of murder, possession of methadone with intent to deliver and delivery of a controlled substance.

The prosecution alleges that Keeney "mixed drugs" and gave them to her boyfriend that led to his death.

Benjamin Murray, 18, shared a home with Keeney on Reedyville Road.

News reports say Murray went to sleep in a hot tub after a night of partying. Keeney discovered Murray was not breathing, he was pronounced dead later at Roane General Hospital.

The state's autopsy showed he died from a combination of drugs including methadone, diazepam and morphine, complicated by drowning in the hot tub.

Another person who had been at the house that night, Cristal Coon, 24, of Spencer, was also charged with murder and ended up entering a plea to involuntary manslaughter, a misdemeanor, and two felony drug charges, according to the Times Record-Roane County Reporter.

Coon was sentenced to a year on the involuntary manslaughter charge and 1-to-15 years on the drug charges.

Keeney is being held in Central Regional Jail without bond.
