COMMISSION TRIES AGAIN TO GET COURTHOUSE ELEVATOR

(09/12/2006)
The Calhoun County Commission decided Monday to use some matching money to try and obtain grant funding for an elevator for the county courthouse.

The commission has been attempting to obtain grant money for an elevator for for at least 12 years, without results.

The cost of the elevator project has risen from abut $150,000 to over $500,000.

The commission is pledging about $60,000 as a match.

An asphalted walking trail for the Upper West Fork Park could become a reality, if a grant for the project the commission is requesting is approved.

Through Courthouse Improvement and Security grants, the commission has requested funding for outside doors for the courthouse, improved outside lighting and replacement of deteriorating concrete steps.

The commission approved the sheriff's settlement, appointed election workers and accepted the resignation of Jerry Riggs from the 911 and EMS boards.

The commission approved the hiring of two deputy sheriffs by Sheriff Carl Ballengee.

A report on the 911 building project indicated the tower project is expected to continue shortly, after arrival of the steel sections.

A request by Justin Wizard for a tax adjustment was referred to the prosecutor for a decision regarding legality.

The next commission meeting is scheduled for October 10th.
