Calhoun students grades 5-8 will be exposed to some new measures to improve conduct, according to a report given to the school board last night by Principal Karen Kirby and teacher Linda Jarvis.
The "Respect and Protect" program was described as a new approach to school discipline. "It is a positive approach," said Kirby. The program also involves students getting "conduct grades."
The school board employed Susan Carper as assistant principal at Calhoun Middle-High School and Amber Ganoe as science teacher.
The board went into executive session for about 35 minutes to discuss personnel issues, after which they approved a rather lengthy list of hires. (More to follow)
School board president Lee Evans discussed problems related to the installation of fans and ceiling tile to prevent mildew and mold in a locker room.
Evans complimented Youth League Football, a group that is now using the athletic field at Mt. Zion. "They had great participation (Grid-o-Rama), with six teams, going beyond to do a great job cleaning up after the event," he said.
The board reviewed individual concerns written by board members:
Five members expressed concern about the drop-out rate and school discipline.
Four members expressed concern about better communication between the superintendent and board members concerning jobs and applicants; improvement of academics/No Child Left Behind
Three members expressed concern about block scheduling, dead-head bus miles and improving the band.
Two members expressed concern about clean and well-maintained facilities, more parental involvement, update policy manual and upgrade camera security system at CM-HS (a project which has been completed).
More to follow on board meeting.
