CALHOUN HAS TWO TRAFFIC FATALITIES - Emergency Services Experience Peak Days

(07/31/2006)
There were two vehicular related deaths in Calhoun in July, the death of Roane County resident Carmelita Chambers, age 18, and the death of well-known Orma farmer, Bruce McCune, age 89.

Authorities said Chambers died instantly July 15th when her car left the highway, jumped a creek bed and struck a tree at Letherbark, about two miles from the Calhoun-Roane line.

Trooper P.S. Fisher of the Spencer detachment was headed in the opposite direction when he met the Chambers vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. He turned his cruiser around and came upon the crash.   accident photo

Traffic on US 33-119 was delayed for nearly two hours waiting for the Medical Examiner. Arnoldsburg firemen, Calhoun EMS and Roane County emergency services responded quickly to the scene at 2:30 p.m.

Chambers (pictured right) was a recent graduate of Roane County High School and had planned to start college this fall.

The youth was well-known to several Calhoun families, and was reportedly traveling to a birthday party in the county when the accident happened.

Bruce McCune, 89, died July 13th on Munday Road after a truck in which he was a passenger rolled-over and landed back on its wheels. It was driven by his nephew Roscoe McCune, who escaped injury.

(pictured left) had been to see his physician in Parkersburg and was sight-seeing with his nephew when the wreck happened.

The Grantsville VFD with an ambulance from Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center responded to the scene a short distance off State Route 5 near Big Bend.

Rescue workers said McCune coded on the way to the hospital.

The McCune fatality was one of four crashes in the county on July 13th, likely associated with rain-slick highways.

The accidents stretched the county's emergency services. All five ambulances from Calhoun EMS and MHHCC, and all three fire departments were involved.

Calhoun EMS Director Josh Johnson said "It was about as busy as it's ever been around here."

A Calhoun EMS ambulance crew transporting a medical patient came upon the accident, summoned help and began to administer care.

The same day, the Upper West Fork VFD and Calhoun EMS responded to two more accidents.

A vehicle rolled-over on its top on Rt. 16 south of Chloe Hardware at 4:30 p.m. Two teens, age 15 and 16, received minor injuries and were released from Roane General Hospital.

The fourth accident was for a vehicle that left Rt. 16 near the Milo Road intersection rolling over three times and landing in a meadow. One person with head injuries was taken to Roane General Hospital.
