MAN KILLED AT TOWN CENTER MALL - A Charleston man is dead and a 16-year-old teenager is in custody following a midnight robbery Friday in Charleston.
Police say 25-year old Joshua Boggess was shot and killed after leaving work at a popular eatery known as Chili's, located in the Town Center Mall.
News accounts said Boggess was apparently heading to his car and was approached in the parking lot of the BB&T Bank building at the intersection of Laidley and Lee Streets by three young, black men.
Police said "Mr. Boggess struck the suspect and in retaliation he shot him at least one time in the chest with a small caliber handgun."
Nobody actually witnessed the shooting, but there were a lot of people in the mall area.
A midnight movie premiere was about to begin at a nearby theater and there were many milling around the Mall in the other direction, police said.
Police say the suspect and his cohorts were simply looking for a victim to rob.
"This guy was a hard working individual and he was earning his money and wanting to keep it. He wasn't going to give it up to a couple of kids out there looking to get some easy money."
Police said Boggess was working two jobs trying to pay off debts. He and his girlfriend were expecting a baby soon.
