Left to Right - Stan Norman, Albert Tanner and Victor Whytsell
Story and photos by Judy Kerns
On June 20, 2006, the Grantsville V.F.W. Post 5959 represented by Victor Whytsell, Albert Tanner, and Stan Norman remembered area veterans by setting a flagpole in the Miller Cemetery at Shock, West Virginia.
Local veterans, Jack Miller (Korean Conflict) and Vernon Kerns (Vietnam) joined the three V.F.W. volunteers. Also present were Diana Miller and Judy Kerns.
Upon completion of setting the flagpole, a short dedication ceremony was held in honor of all who have served our country. The American Veteran, written and read by Vernon D. Miller, was played. The ceremony was concluded with a scripture reading and prayer by Vernon Kerns. Lunch was served to the group.
Special memories today of veterans of our area who are laid to rest in this cemetery: Brooks Wolfe (WW II & Korean), Clayton Wolfe (WWII), Clarence Collins (WW I), Orbert Miller (WW II), Dale Nicholas (Korean), Meredith Minney (Vietnam), Clifford Varner (WWII) and Earl Miller (WWII).
In recognition and appreciation of the community service of the V.F.W Post 5959, a framed copy of The American Veteran will be presented to the local group.
