(06/17/2006)
A Moundsville man who shot a Charleston Police officer Thursday night had a 12-page rap sheet.

Brett Lawrence Hanick, 45, described as a career criminal, died after Sgt. Eric Johnson returned fire.

Hanick shot Sgt. Eric Johnson at least two times when Johnson approached his vehicle in a Kanawha City hotel parking lot. Sgt. Johnson returned fire and fatally wounded Hanick.

Hannick had run-ins with law enforcement dating back more than 20 years and served nine years of a 20-year prison term after a 1986 conviction for armed robbery.

His crime spree included subsequent charges for kidnapping, armed robberies, sexual assault and being a fugitive from justice.

Sgt. Johnson and other Charleston Police officers were operating a surveillance operation outside the Day's Inn when they observed Hanick acting suspiciously.

The police officer is in fair condition at CAMC.
