James E. "Sonny" Starcher, 54 of Spencer, West Virginia died July 18, 2001 at Roane General
Hospital, Spencer, after an extended illness.
He was born September 10, 1946 in Roane County, a son of the late Wilford C. and Betsy Lou
Miller. "Sonny" served as a Spencer City Councilman for two terms. He was a member of the
Spencer Development Authority and attended Slate United Methodist Church.
He was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned a National Defense Service
Medal, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, Vietnam Service Medal and a Vietnam Campaign Medal
with Device 1960. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion Post 21, Disabled American
Veterans and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Mr. Starcher is survived by his wife, Peggy Freeland Starcher, a daughter, Crystal Dawn
Starcher Lawson of Spencer; a son, James E. "Bub" Starcher of Spencer and five
grandchildren, Cruise Lawson, Cody Starcher, Christian Lawson and Casey Lawson all of
Spencer and Tara Diehl of Daytona Beach, Florida.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hiram "Hi" and "Sis"
Lukens.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001 at the Taylor-Vandale
Funeral Home, Spencer. Reverend Jackie Roberts will officiate. Burial will follow in the Eventide
Cemetery, Spencer. Graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Post 21. Friends
may call at the funeral home from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Friday. |
