Calhoun High School's Anatomy students have just returned from three days and two nights touring the medical museums of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
First-year teacher Mr. Ansel Payne led the trip of fourteen students through the Mutter Museum (including its collection of preserved 'monstrosities') and the world-famous Koerperwelten (or 'Bodyworlds' in English) exhibit, where real human bodies are preserved and posed for public viewing.
Students viewed Koerperwelten-Bodyworlds displays
Students saw skulls with injuries sustained during the American Civil War, pathological embryos, skeletons with severe birth defects, and even part of John Wilkes Booth's actual spinal column (preserved in a jar). And when that was over, they still had room for Philly cheesesteaks!
Students also spent time touring Philadelphia's South Street neighborhood, renowned for its colorful shops and its even more colorful characters. From antique stores to Arabic restaurants, Calhoun students were able to shop, eat, or just hang out in the eclectic atmosphere that only a large American city can offer.

The class paid for its trip through fundraising efforts and the generous donations of local businesses. Anyone interested in donating to the fund for next year's trip should visit Mr. Payne at the high school or contact the office at 304-354-6148.
