CALHOUN MAN'S APPEAL REJECTED BY SUPREME COURT

(03/30/2006)
The WV Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal by a Chloe, Calhoun County man.

Roger Eric Jones, 33, is appealing his murder conviction of an elderly Roane County man.

Jones is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole at Mt. Olive Correctional Center.

He was convicted of 1st degree murder in the death of Oral "Sam" Jett in January 2003. Jett's bludgeoned body was found along a rural road near Amma.

Public defender Teresa Monk offered grounds for an appeal, including faulty wording in the indictment and evidence she said should not have been presented to the jury, according to the   Times Record-Roane County Reporter

Prosecutor Mark Sergent said "It was a clean trial...He was found guilty of a senseless, gruesome murder of an elderly gentleman who was just trying to help him by giving him a car ride."

Jones is seeking an appeal on another conviction, a murder which was committed about a week before Jett's death.

Jones pled no contest to charges of 2nd degree murder and three related felony charges in the death of John Morehead.

More head's body was found in a mobile home that had been set on fire along Arnoldsburg Road, east of Spencer.

Robbery was given as the motive in both slayings.
