GRANTSVILLE POLICE CHIEF GORDON "LET GO"

(03/30/2006)
Grantsville Police Chief Ron Gordon has been "let go" after the officer failed to appear at a meeting Mayor Wilbert Kerby scheduled yesterday morning.

Mayor Kerby said he was advised by Gordon's attorney, Dennis Curry, that Gordon would not show for the meeting, which Kerby indicated was called to discuss a number of issues with the police chief.

Kerby indicated that Gordon should have been available to meet with him and other officials since he was still on the payroll.

Gordon was suspended with pay by Mayor Kerby on February 24, alleging "problems" in the performance of his duties.

The same day Gordon was suspended by Calhoun Sheriff Carl Ballengee without pay, related to part-time services he was providing the county, including monitoring home confinement cases.

Officials have yet to say why Gordon has been suspended, with speculation and rumors continuing on a daily basis throughout the community.

Officials would not confirm that a number of other issues are being looked at regarding wrong-doing by other individuals in addition to Gordon.

State Police from outside the county have been in Calhoun for a number of weeks related to the investigation.

Mayor Kerby said yesterday the town is looking at hiring Gordon's replacement soon.

Gordon became Grantsville police chief in 2003 during the last few days of Mayor Gary Knight's administration, following the resignation of Chief Charles McCroskey

Newly elected mayor Neil Blankenship continued using Gordon's services during his tenure.
