COUNTY OFFICIALS WILL RECEIVE MANDATED PAY RAISE

(03/04/2006)
The Calhoun Commission will have to come up with about $40,000 to compensate elected officials since the county is being re-classified from Class Ten to Class Nine, based on the tax assessments of the county.

Commissioners are working on the 2006-07 budget this month.

Calhoun and Wirt County have been the only two counties in the state for several years in Class Ten.

The change will automatically elevate salaries of elected officials, which have been set by the state.

County Clerks and Circuit Clerks will now receive $39,600 from $35,200.

Assessor and Sheriff will now receive $34,925 from $31,900.

Prosecuting Attorney will now receive $41,800 from $38,500.

County Commissioners from $16,500 to $20,350.

The WV Code allows special supplements to county sheriffs and county assessors.

With the classification change, the assessor will receive a $9,000 supplement from $6,500.

County sheriff's also receive a supplement, which varies from year to year.

The classification change will go into effect on July 1.

The West Virginia legislature has several bills, if passed, that would affect the salaries of elected officials in the state.

One calls for a $10,000 across-the-board raise, another for a small increase and the third shifts the responsibility for setting salaries to county commissions.
