Over 9,300 high school seniors have applied for a PROMISE Scholarship. The deadline to apply was Wednesday.
More than an additional 1,000 students applied this year over last.
Lisa DeFrank-Cole, the head of the PROMISE Scholarship Program, said that some of those who sent in applications are not eligible for the grant, but offer apply across the board for scholarship money.
Promise applicants must have a 21 ACT score.
This year the first class of PROMISE Scholars are graduating with a four-year college degree.
There is still controversy in the legislature regarding the rising costs of the scholarships, including the issuance to students whose parents have higher incomes and could pay for their education.
